Some Facts about Me

Politics is probably my least favorite subject. On any given day, I can swing from liberal to conservative—and back again. I “blame” this on my West Coast living. Before I moved to the West Coast, I grew up in a home that was staunchly Republican. My father was a member of the “Young Republicans,” my aunt was a Republican Chairperson for the area, and the majority of my friends were from Republican families.

Now, I am a registered  Independent. Why? I don’t identify with either Republicans or Democrats. And, frankly, I really wish both parties would just disappear. What ever happened to doing was was best for the country, and the residents of the country?

I‘m an avid reader. But, naturally, not in a traditional sense. I can count the number of books I’ve read over the last year on one hand. It’s not that I don’t like to read books, it’s that I generally get partially through one, only to have some distraction prevent me from finishing the book. The books I did read? Well, when I was traveling frequently, I found that reading a book was a good distraction from lousy airline service.

I generally read business magazines, auto magazines, and several news feeds that cover technology, consumer protection, travel, and automotive topics. I probably read two hundred articles a week, on an average week.

Favorite Place
London. Hands down. If I could move to London right now and live there the rest of my life, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Beyond the people, I like the city’s layout and transportation. The London Underground (“The Tube” to Londoners.) is a remarkable feat of efficiency. The fact that it was constructed many decades ago only adds to its charm.

The climate isn’t perfect, and I don’t know that I’d ever get used to them driving on the “wrong side” of the road. And, yes, traffic is a pain. But, outside of those nuances, it’s a fantastic place. It’s only a train ride to beautiful countryside, and a short plane ride to several other wonderful European countries.

And, finally, if you’re looking for a city with great museums and architecture that dates back centuries, London has it waiting for you. The city is full of history–some good, some not so good. And, lest we forget the remnants of the monarchy that remain!

Favorite Food
I almost hate to fill this out, as it’s probably the same as most other people. I don’t have a favorite food, but I have a favorite type of food. Italian. Specifically, Southern Italy. Although I fully understand that we have mutilated most Italian dishes when we serve them in the U.S., I have known enough Italian families to enjoy authentic cuisine.

Second to my Italian food crush is Mexican food. Give me some traditional tacos and burritos, and I’m a happy camper. And no, folks, nachos are not considered to be authentic Mexican food!

Favorite Season

Without a doubt, Autumn is my favorite season. I love the variations between warm weather and colder weather. On the West Coast, I am limited in my full ability to enjoy all four seasons in their unique glory. However, Autumn is still pretty consistent in the variation between warm and cold. And, when were not in the midst of a drought, we can count on plenty of showers to break up an otherwise dry climate.

Food for Thought

Here are a couple of quotations that match my own philosophy quite closely.

Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases; for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him. Though while he lived he counted himself blessed--and men praise you when you prosper--he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light. A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.
Psalm 49:13-20
The self-controlled person, moving among objects, with his senses free from attachment and malevolence and brought under his own control, attains tranquility.
Bhagavad Gita II.64
